When making a different activity every week, it is hard to be inspired. Scrolling through social media can be helpful, but looking around to see what is currently happening can be very worthwhile.
This week, I looked at the Olympics, and thought about what I could do with young children (we see ages 0-6 come into our play room). I came up with 4 varying activities:
1. Puppet Racing
2. Balance Beam
3. Basketball
4. Team work
1. Puppet Racing
Race your puppets! I used a bin, tape, string, and little puppets. Assembly is easy; tape the string on the sides of the bin to make a "lane" and tie the puppets to the string! You can make it short, as I have, or make it long by tying the string to chairs across the room. Pull them along with your fingers, tongs, or clothes pins.
2. Balance Beam
One of the most popular and exciting Olympic games is the gymnastics. Children are so impressed when they see the jumps, kicks and spins! I brought in a fun balance beam, and let the kids go wild.
3. Basketball
A high energy sport at the Olympics is basketball, and what a great excuse to get out an activity to let kids throw balls around! I use small, light balls so rogue balls don't damage other toys or walls. Set up the hoop at your kids height so it is easy for them to toss the balls in.
4. Team work
This activity is not from the Olympics, but I added it for the spirit of team work. I use two strings as handles, a shallow box with a hole cut out, and little balls. One string is tied to two corners, then the other string is tied to the opposite ones. Two people stand across from each other, tilting the box with the string to get all the balls down the hole.
There are so many Olympic events to get inspiration from. Keep an eye out for more children's Olympic activities!
